Knowledge is infinite. Knowledge is power. Knowledge is the truth and the power to overcome obstacles.

As I look around me everyday I see fear. I see fear expressed on people’s faces and I hear it in their voices. I ask myself, “where is all this fear coming from?” And, I wonder if all this fear is rational. It is important to remember that good decision making comes with a reasonable assessment of threats.

The concept of threat is what I want to address and what I want you to take from this encounter. There is one thing that I know about human behavior and motivation: Either real or perceived, a threat triggers a chemical response in the brain and body. A threat may not be real, but if a person perceives something as a threat the perceived threat is very real to that person and triggers the same physiological response.

In regard to firearms, a gun pointed at you is a real threat and your fear is rational. This is true no matter who you are or where you are from. I want you to think about this for a moment. I am not here to preach to the choir. I know what side of the Second Amendment you are on. I am here to ask you to consider the great responsibility that is attached to the freedom the Second Amendment grants us.

I am not here to add to your fear of losing your right to keep and bear arms. There is enough of that. Are there people out there who want to take firearms out of the hands of citizens? Yes… Of course. I question the rationality of our fear of loosing our right to keep and bear arms. I guess I just know that no one is going to try to take a firearm from my hands without killing me first.

Therefore, I see our work in supporting the Second Amendment as more of a marketing or publicity campaign. There are a few things I know that I want to share with you:

1. The subject of firearms has been a topic of passionate discussion since their invention. As we work to restore liberty, we will be asked to address firearms and their uses. We all have opinions and ideas about firearms. People base their opinions on experiences with firearms or what they have been told about them. It is in the interest of liberty that we detach ourselves from the passion and emotion that the subject of firearms evokes. It is important that we speak without judgment because our listeners are ready to defend their positions on the subject. Find a common ground. People are more receptive to what you say if they know that you understand their position. Please know that if someone is afraid of your position you will never win them over to your side. When you are calm and confident in your behavior and beliefs people see your strength. When your actions are inspired by that which is good you will inspire others and not perpetuate fear.

I know how frustrating it is to hear the news about things like the Blair-Holt Firearm Act. We see proposals like this as a threat. Whether or not bills like the Holt act are real threats depends upon us and how we oppose these bills. We can get angry and react out of fear, or we can remember that a bill is only a bill until it becomes law.

In order to keep the freedoms that we have we must exercise them. This brings me to ask: How are you going to exercise your right to keep and bear arms? Are you going to make a political statement, or are you going to act out of authenticity? I ask this because I know this:

Owning a firearm is one of the greatest freedoms we have in this country. However, with this freedom comes a responsibility. BEFORE YOU EVER PICK UP A FIREARM YOU MUST:

1. Know how to use it.
2. Intend to use it.

Those are the rules to possessing firearms. They are not toys (although some collectors may disagree). Anything else is just showing your ass and can get someone hurt.

If you had not had mentoring and education in the use of firearms I urge you to peruse your interest. There are taxpayer funded centers all across the state of Missouri. (I apologize for not being able to speak for what is available in Kansas. However, I am positive that Kansas offers just as much as Missouri).

I would also like the address the issue of militia. Constitutional scholar and attorney, Dr. Edwin Vieira, gives a very clear report on what the Constitution offers. “Nothing other than a well-regulated militia is necessary for a free state.” According to Vieira, the Constitution does not say anything else is necessary for a free state. Not Congress, not the Presidency, not the Senate. A well-regulated militia is all we need to ensure a free state.

Section 311 of US Code Title 10, entitled, “Militia: composition and classes” says;

(a) The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard.

(b) The classes of the militia are —
1. Thee organized militia, which consists of the National Guard and the Naval Militia; and
2. The unorganized militia, which consists of the members of the militia who are not members of the National Guard or Naval Militia.

To put it more succinctly: The militia is a part of our government, outlined in our constitution. This means that it is of, for, and by the people. That makes us all members of the militia. Now, I beg to question… How will we represent ourselves?

We are all being called speak on the issue of firearms. It is our responsibility to hear people’s concerns regarding firearms. It is our responsibility to address these concerns in a manner that does not evoke fear.

People fear what they do not understand. It is our duty to help people understand that firearms are necessary to our society for many reasons. If we speak with respect and we speak the truth we will be free to own our firearms without fear of losing them.

Our Founding Principle

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

Written by Travis Maddox.

For us to see a resurgence of Liberty and Freedom in America today I believe we must find our way back to our roots, not roots in a particular political party or the roots of conservatism or libertarianism but back to the roots of Liberty. Our Founders did this when they took on the endeavor to establish a more perfect Union. We must understand what Liberty is and where it comes from.

Our Founders believed that we are endowed by our Creator certain unalienable rights, that man was a free being. Free to work, think and choose for himself or herself. They believed man only answered to God. The belief was that these unalienable rights were “untouchable” or “incapable of being alienated, that is, sold and transferred” as Black’s Law Dictionary puts it. In other words man nor government could take them away. Our Founders were well educated and well read and understood Liberty and where it came from.

Today conservative/constitutional/libertarians understand Liberty but only as it pertains to their agenda. We are divided and only focus on our “pet projects”. Life, guns, sovereignty, drugs, the FED and many others are very important issues to fight for but if we do not know where the foundation of those and other issues are rooted in we might continue to fail.

Our founders knew this and that is why many of them looked upon the issues they faced through the eyes of individual liberty. Man is free regardless of his physical state, his mind, body and spirit were created free and only answerable to his creator and himself. Many Founders knew that the only way for man to prosper, create and develop true growth as a being was to be completely free. So one might ask if this is true then why create a government at all? Our Founders feared that complete anarchy would turn to tyranny. It is easy for man to become corrupt when there is no protection for our rights, the strongest or the one with the most guns, rules.

So their task was simple yet difficult. Create a system where man is free to worship, live, create, build and prosper but with only enough government to protect those rights. You see our Founders knew that the only true responsibility of a government was to protect a person’s individual rights. Everything they did was weighed against that principle. Were they always right? No. We are imperfect and imperfect being’s create imperfect things. That is the reason though behind the Constitution being the supreme law of the land. They knew with the Constitution there would always be a foundation to fall back on.

So where have we gone wrong today in our fight for freedom? Today we focus on our pet projects and some of us have several. We fight these issues most of the time autonomous of other organizations or parties and most always with good intentions. Our flaw in all of this is many of us have forgotten our founding principles; that man is free and governments only responsibility is to protect that freedom, all other actions a government may do treads on that freedom.

I hear all the time that we need to go back to the Regan or Goldwater days or go back to the roots of conservatism or even back to the Founders. While all that talk may be good it is still in vain because it does not go deep to our founding principle. It will only take us back to a flawed man. What is that founding principle? LIBERTY!

Now I know by now I have stepped on a few toes but maybe that is a good thing. You can still fight for the issues that are important to you just remember where the principles of that battle are founded. Man is free and governments only job is to protect that freedom. Now with that point of view things become clear as we debate certain issues. Do we have a right to live? A right to protect our lives? Yes. Then governments only job is to protect that right. How about to own property and be secure in it? What would the government’s job be? And to defend our lives and property? You see when we view these and other issues through our founding principles the answers to what government’s role is, is easy. Our Founders even acknowledged that government’s job is to protect the right of the individual to overthrow and change the said government when it becomes too far reaching.

Now ask yourself how many things does our government do that does not protect mans right to be free? If whatever action a government is doing does not protect the Liberty of man to be free then we must fight against those actions and maybe against the government committing those actions, it is our duty.

Today our government has become the antithesis of our founding principle. Everything they do these days works against individual Liberty. I fear we are closing in on the day when we must decide to take up our duty and throw off such a government. Until that day comes and while you continue fighting the issues that make you a passionate patriot remember the foundation fighting those battles is mans Liberty and right to be free. Do this and it will strengthen you for the larger battle that may still lie ahead.

HEADLINE: Announcing the Midwest Liberty Fest: Activism, Education and Celebration

August 5th, 2009: The DuQuoin (IL) State Fairgrounds will be brought to life by the Spirit of Liberty on October 9, 10 and 11 as grassroots activists from across the political spectrum and across the nation gather for the Midwest Liberty Fest.  Participants will have the opportunity to learn from successful activists, hear from current candidates and celebrate the growing movement toward freedom and constitutional government.

The planning committee, sponsored by the Liberty Restoration Project, consists of activists who decided to provide the public with an event centered around ideas that unite us instead of divide us.  The goal is to empower concerned citizens through the knowledge and real experiences of successful movers and shakers; everyone should be able to walk away with action items and project ideas in hand!

Some of the most well-known names in the liberty movement will be paired with up-and-coming leaders.  From Adam Kokesh, the Iraq veteran and anti-war activist turned Congressional Candidate, to Michael Badnarik, the 2004 Libertarian candidate for President and Constitutional Scholar, to Sheriff Richard Mack, the man educating our nation’s law enforcement on their Constitutional role, attendees will have the opportunity to learn from some serious movers and shakers.

Interested speakers, musicians or sponsors should send a letter of request to the planning team at the following email address: team@midwestlibertyfest.com.

Donations will provide transportation for speakers, location rental and insurance costs, and promotional materials such as radio and television ads.  Keep your eyes on www.midwestlibertyfest.com for an up-to-the-minute confirmed speakers list and the upcoming announcement of our commemorative ticket.
